Merzouga vs Zagora: Which Desert Should You Choose?

When you plan a Sahara desert tour in Morocco, you quickly have to choose between two destinations: Merzouga and Zagora. Both offer camel rides, Berber hospitality and nights under the stars, but they are very different experiences. Here is an honest comparison from our local team to help you decide.

Merzouga: the classic Sahara

Merzouga sits at the foot of Erg Chebbi, a sea of golden sand dunes that rise up to 150 metres high. This is the Sahara of postcards: endless orange waves of sand, spectacular sunsets and sunrises, and silence. Around Merzouga you can also visit the Gnawa village of Khamlia, the nomad families of the area and, after the rains, the lake of Dayet Srji, where flamingos sometimes stop.

Zagora: the closest desert to Marrakech

Zagora lies at the end of the Draa Valley, the longest palm grove in Morocco. The desert here is more of a rocky landscape with smaller dunes, but the road is beautiful and much shorter. Zagora is the best choice when you have only 2 days, and the Draa Valley with its kasbahs and date palms is a highlight in itself.

Our local advice

If you can, choose Merzouga. The extra day is worth it: the dunes of Erg Chebbi are one of the most beautiful landscapes in Morocco, and the road there is a journey in itself. Frequently asked questions

Which desert is better, Merzouga or Zagora?

For big sand dunes and the classic Sahara experience, Merzouga is better. Zagora is closer to Marrakech and ideal for a short 2-day trip.

Can I visit the Zagora desert in one day from Marrakech?

It is possible but not recommended: it means about 14 hours of driving. Plan at least 2 days with a night in a desert camp.

Is Merzouga worth the long drive?

Yes. The road crosses the High Atlas, Ait Ben Haddou and the Dades and Todra valleys, so the journey is part of the experience.
