Chefchaouen, the Blue City of Morocco
Hidden in the Rif mountains of northern Morocco, Chefchaouen is famous all over the world for its blue-washed houses, peaceful atmosphere and mountain views. Founded in 1471, the “Blue Pearl” of Morocco is the perfect break between the big imperial cities. Here is our complete guide.
Why is Chefchaouen blue?
There are many stories: some say the blue was brought by Jewish families who settled here, symbolising the sky and heaven; others say it keeps mosquitoes away or keeps the houses cool in summer. Whatever the reason, the locals repaint their walls regularly, and every alley is a new shade of blue.
Best things to do in Chefchaouen
- Wander the blue medina: the best photos are in the small alleys early in the morning, before the day visitors arrive.
- Plaza Outa el Hammam: the main square, with cafés, the Grand Mosque and its octagonal minaret.
- The Kasbah: a red-walled fortress with a garden, a small museum and a tower with views over the town.
- Ras el Ma: the mountain spring at the edge of the medina, where locals still wash their clothes.
- Spanish Mosque at sunset: a 30-minute walk up the hill gives the best panoramic view of the Blue City.
- Shopping: woollen blankets, woven hats, goat cheese and local crafts from the Rif.

Akchour waterfalls and God’s Bridge
About 45 minutes from Chefchaouen, in the Talassemtane National Park, the Akchour hike follows a river through green gorges to beautiful waterfalls and a natural rock arch known as God’s Bridge. Bring good shoes and a swimsuit in summer.
