Things to Do in Casablanca
Casablanca is Morocco’s largest city and its economic capital, and for many travellers it is the first stop in the country thanks to its international airport. It is a modern city by the Atlantic, but it also hides one of the most impressive mosques in the world, a charming old quarter and beautiful Art Deco buildings. Here are the best things to do in Casablanca.
1. Hassan II Mosque
The highlight of Casablanca. Built partly over the ocean, the Hassan II Mosque has one of the tallest minarets in the world and a prayer hall decorated by thousands of Moroccan craftsmen. It is one of the few mosques in Morocco open to non-Muslim visitors, with guided tours several times a day (outside prayer times).

2. The Corniche of Ain Diab
Casablanca’s seafront promenade is lined with beach clubs, cafés and restaurants. It is the place to watch the sunset over the Atlantic and see how modern Casablancans spend their evenings.
3. The Habous quarter
Also called the “new medina”, the Habous was built in the 1930s in a traditional style. It is calm, clean and full of bookshops, olive and pastry sellers, and craft shops. Don’t miss the famous Moroccan pastries of the area.
4. The old medina and the port
Smaller and more local than the medinas of Fes or Marrakech, the old medina of Casablanca is a good place to feel the everyday life of the city, close to the fishing port and its seafood restaurants.
5. Mohammed V Square and Art Deco architecture
The city centre is full of elegant buildings from the early 20th century, mixing Art Deco and Moorish styles. Walk around Mohammed V Square, the Central Market and Boulevard Mohammed V to see the best examples.
6. Rick’s Café
Inspired by the classic film “Casablanca”, this restaurant in an old mansion recreates the atmosphere of the movie, with a piano bar and a lovely interior. Booking is recommended.
How long to stay in Casablanca?
One day is enough to see the main sights. Then continue to Rabat (about 1 hour), Marrakech (about 3 hours) or Fes, and on to the Sahara desert.
