Things to Do in Rabat

Rabat, the capital of Morocco, is often skipped by travellers, and that is a mistake. Calm, green and clean, with its old kasbah overlooking the ocean and monuments listed by UNESCO, Rabat is one of the most pleasant cities in the country. Here are the best things to do in Rabat.

1. Kasbah of the Udayas

Perched above the mouth of the Bouregreg river, this 12th-century fortress hides blue-and-white alleys that look like a small Chefchaouen by the sea. Walk to the terrace for views over the Atlantic, then relax in the Andalusian Gardens and the traditional Café Maure.

2. Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V

The Hassan Tower is the unfinished minaret of a huge 12th-century mosque, surrounded by the remains of its columns. In front of it stands the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, with its white walls, green roof and royal guards on horseback at the entrance. Visitors are welcome.

3. Chellah

An ancient Roman town turned into a Merinid necropolis, Chellah is a peaceful place of ruins, gardens and storks nesting on the old minaret.

4. The medina and the Bouregreg

Rabat’s medina is relaxed and easy to explore, with shops selling carpets, leather and spices without the pressure of bigger cities. Then walk along the Bouregreg river, with views of the twin city of Salé and the modern Grand Theatre.

5. Museums and the beach

Art lovers will enjoy the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. In summer, the beaches of Rabat and nearby Temara are popular with families.

How to include Rabat in your trip

Rabat is about 1 hour from Casablanca and is connected to Tangier by the Al Boraq high-speed train. Half a day to one day is enough to see the highlights, ideally on the way between Casablanca and Chefchaouen or Fes.
