Things to Do in Tangier

Facing Spain across the Strait of Gibraltar, Tangier has inspired artists, writers and travellers for centuries. Today it is a lively port city, the arrival point of the ferries from Europe and the perfect start for a tour of northern Morocco. Here are the best things to do in Tangier.

1. The Kasbah and the Kasbah Museum

At the top of the medina, the Kasbah is a quiet quarter of white houses and narrow lanes. The former sultan’s palace, Dar el-Makhzen, now houses a museum, and the terraces nearby offer wide views over the port and the coast of Spain.

2. Grand Socco and Petit Socco

The Grand Socco is the lively square between the new town and the medina. From there, walk down to the Petit Socco, a small square surrounded by historic cafés, once the meeting place of writers and adventurers.

3. Mint tea at Café Hafa

Opened in 1921, Café Hafa is a series of simple terraces built on the cliff, facing the sea. Order a glass of mint tea and enjoy the view of the Strait of Gibraltar, as many famous visitors did before you.

4. The American Legation Museum

Located in the medina, this beautiful building was the first property owned by the United States abroad. Today it is a museum about the history of Tangier and its international past.

5. Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules

A short drive west of the city, the Cap Spartel lighthouse marks the place where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea. Nearby, the Caves of Hercules have a famous sea opening shaped like the map of Africa.

6. Day trips from Tangier

  • Asilah: a charming white town on the Atlantic, famous for its murals, about 45 minutes away.
  • Tetouan: a UNESCO-listed medina with Andalusian influence.
  • Chefchaouen: the Blue City, about 2 to 3 hours away. Read our Chefchaouen guide.

Getting to Tangier

Tangier is easy to reach: ferries cross from Tarifa and Algeciras in Spain, the international airport has flights from Europe, and the Al Boraq high-speed train links Tangier with Rabat and Casablanca.
